"THE QUALITY OF HUMAN ACTION IS NOT THE ADHERENCE TO THE LAW, BUT THE QUANTITY OF LOVE FOUND IN EACH ACTION"!

At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than, the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.”  (Matthew 12:1-8)

REFLECTION

In the Gospel of Mathew 12:1-8 above the Pharasees pointed out to Jesus - look, your disciples are doing what's not lawful on the Sabbath and they were right; They law explicitly stated that no one should harvest on the Sabbath and the disciples were harvesting corn that they'll eat for they were very hungry! But the Pharasees failed to identify or realized that the disciples were hungry!

What do we learn here?

Jesus want to turn our attention to this reality that:- "The quality of human action is not the adherence to the law, but the quantity of love found in each action"!

For instance, it's typically wrong for a woman to come to the church without covering her head, it's considered to be unlawful. However, if the woman coming back from work and actually had a hard time at work and want to talk to God. Her head wasn't covered and don't even have a handkerchief with her, but wants to come and have a short and brief prayer in the Church because of the hard time she had at work, would the woman be chased away because she's not covering her head?

Certainly no! This is exactly what Jesus was trying to insinuate - that love in this woman for her God is greater than covering her hair or not covering her head!

This is very important to us in the modern days Christianity too! We always look around to see who is breaking the law and vice versa! But we fail to identify the quality of the actions of people and the quantity of love that is in the actions!

Laws are good. They help to keep society in order and maintain security of life and property. However, tied to the law is the spirit of the law. Beyond order and security, the law looks out for the good of human beings. Any law that stands against this good is not a just law. We are a fortunate people. We are guided not just by laws in our journey to salvation; we are guided by laws and grace. Every day we are confronted with choices between good and evil. Our choices daily should be informed by the laws of God and also by complete reliance on the grace of God.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."  -Ephesians 4:32

- Make a prayer of repentance from the depth of your heart.

- Pray for our hearts to be softened towards one another, so that we can give and receive forgiveness readily within our families, churches and communities.

Let us pray:

O Lord, I am weak and broken, surrounded on all sides by corruption and perversion. Lord have mercy on me: protect me from my enemies who devour me, and guide me in the way of perfection. No matter what happens to me, whether it be an attack or a seduction, may my love for you protect me from falling into sin. May I live a holy life no matter what others do around me – Amen.
