Her Joy Magnifies the Lord’s Goodness
MAY DEVOTION – DAY 28
Scripture Reading:
Luke 1:46
“My soul magnifies the Lord.”
INTRODUCTION
In a world filled with fear, discouragement, division, and uncertainty, joy can sometimes seem difficult to find. Many people are overwhelmed by worries about the future, struggles in their families, financial hardship, disappointments, sickness, and emotional pain. Yet, amid all these realities, the Blessed Virgin Mary stands before us as a shining example of holy joy and deep trust in God.
The theme for May Devotion Day 28 is:
“Her joy magnifies the Lord’s goodness.”
Mary’s joy was not shallow happiness based on comfort or material success. Her joy came from knowing God, trusting Him completely, and surrendering herself to His will. Even during suffering and uncertainty, Mary remained faithful because her heart was rooted in God’s goodness.
When Mary visited Elizabeth, she proclaimed those beautiful words:
«“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” (Luke 1:46-47)»
This prayer, known as the Magnificat, reveals Mary’s heart. She did not glorify herself. She glorified God. Her life became a song of praise.
Today, many people search for joy in money, popularity, pleasure, relationships, or social media validation, yet they still feel empty. Mary teaches us that true joy comes from God alone.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MAGNIFY THE LORD?
To magnify the Lord means:- to praise Him,
- to make His goodness visible through our lives,
- to acknowledge His greatness,
- to live in gratitude and faith.
Mary’s life pointed people toward God.
She did not seek attention for herself. Instead, her humility allowed God’s glory to shine through her.
Many people today want recognition, applause, and admiration. But Mary teaches us that the greatest honor is allowing God to work through us.
A person magnifies the Lord when:
- they forgive instead of seeking revenge,
- they remain faithful during trials,
- they help the poor,
- they pray sincerely,
- they trust God in suffering,
- they remain humble in success.
MARY’S JOY WAS ROOTED IN GOD
Mary’s joy was spiritual, not worldly.
Think about her situation:
- She was young and inexperienced.
- She faced misunderstanding.
- She carried the responsibility of raising Jesus.
- She fled to Egypt to escape danger.
- She watched her Son rejected and crucified.
Yet despite all this, Mary remained joyful because she trusted God’s plan.
This teaches us an important lesson:
Joy is not the absence of problems; joy is the presence of God.
Many people think:
“I will be happy when life becomes easier.”
But true Christian joy does not wait for perfect circumstances.
Saint Paul said:
«“Rejoice in the Lord always.” (Philippians 4:4)»
Notice he did not say:
“Rejoice only when everything goes well.”
Christian joy comes from knowing:
- God is faithful,
- God is present,
- God never abandons His children.
REAL-LIFE STORY: THE WOMAN WHO PRAISED GOD THROUGH PAIN
There was a woman who lost her husband unexpectedly. She was left alone to raise three children. Life became extremely difficult. Some days she struggled to provide food for the family.Yet every morning she gathered her children and prayed:
“Lord, thank You for the gift of life.”
Her neighbors wondered why she still smiled despite her suffering.
One day someone asked her:
“How do you still praise God after everything you’ve lost?”
She answered:
“Because God has never left me.”
Years later, her children succeeded in life and became a great source of support for her.
She later testified:
“My joy kept my faith alive.”
That is the kind of joy Mary teaches us — joy rooted in trust, not circumstances.
THE DANGER OF SEEKING JOY IN THE WRONG PLACES
Today many people search for happiness in temporary things:- money,
- fame,
- unhealthy relationships,
- alcohol,
- social media attention,
- material possessions.
But these things cannot satisfy the soul permanently.
Ecclesiastes 2:11 reminds us that earthly pleasures alone are meaningless without God.
A person may have wealth and still feel empty.
Mary teaches us that true peace and joy come from God.
When the angel greeted Mary, she was not rich or powerful. Yet she possessed something greater:
grace.
Grace brings a deeper joy than worldly success ever can.
THE MAGNIFICAT: MARY’S SONG OF PRAISE
Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55) is one of the most beautiful prayers in Scripture. It's also known as the The Catena Legionis. It's recited by Legion of Mary members daily all over the world
Catena Legionis

Who is she that comes forth as the morning rising,
fair as the moon, bright as the sun,
terrible as an army set in battle array?
℣. O Mary, conceived without sin,
℟. Pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Let us pray
O Lord Jesus Christ, our Mediator with the Father,
who has been pleased to appoint the most Blessed Virgin, Your Mother, to be our Mother also, and our Mediatrix with You,
mercifully grant that whoever comes to You seeking Your favors may rejoice to receive all of them through her. Amen.
In it, Mary praises God because:
- He is merciful,
- He lifts up the humble,
- He remembers His promises,
- He cares for the poor,
- He is faithful.
Mary recognized that everything she had came from God.
Humility and gratitude always go together.
Proud people focus on themselves.
Grateful people focus on God.
REAL-LIFE STORY: THE YOUNG MAN WHO LEARNED GRATITUDE
A young man spent years complaining about his life:- his salary was low,
- his friends seemed more successful,
- his future felt uncertain.
One day he visited an elderly priest who asked him:
“How many times have you thanked God today?”
The young man became silent because he realized he spent more time complaining than praying.
The priest told him:
“Gratitude opens the heart to joy.”
The young man started writing down five blessings every night before sleeping.
At first it felt difficult, but slowly his attitude changed.
He became:
- more peaceful,
- less anxious,
- more hopeful,
- more prayerful.
Years later he said:
“My life changed the moment I stopped focusing only on what I lacked.”
Mary teaches this same lesson.
JOY IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING
One of the greatest mysteries of Christianity is that joy can exist even during suffering.Mary stood beneath the Cross while Jesus suffered.
Imagine her pain:
- seeing her Son mocked,
- watching Him wounded,
- hearing insults from the crowd.
Yet even there, she remained faithful.
Why?
Because her hope was stronger than despair.
Sometimes God does not immediately remove suffering, but He gives strength to endure it.
Psalm 30:5 says:
«“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”»
This verse reminds believers that suffering is temporary, but God’s love remains eternal.
HOW MARY TEACHES US TO LIVE JOYFULLY
1. Through PrayerMary was a woman of prayer.
Prayer keeps the heart connected to God.
People who stop praying often lose peace because they try to carry life’s burdens alone.
Prayer reminds us:
- God is near,
- God listens,
- God cares.
Even simple prayers can bring peace:
“Mother Mary, pray for me.”
2. Through Gratitude
Mary constantly praised God.
A grateful heart experiences more joy than a complaining heart.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says:
«“Give thanks in all circumstances.”»
Gratitude changes perspective.
Instead of focusing only on problems, gratitude helps us notice blessings.
3. Through Humility
Mary never boasted about herself.
Humility protects the soul from pride and jealousy.
Pride creates competition.
Humility creates peace.
James 4:6 says:
«“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”»
4. Through Trust in God
Mary trusted God even when she did not fully understand His plans.
Many people lose peace because they try to control everything.
Trusting God does not mean life becomes easy; it means we believe God remains faithful.
REAL-LIFE STORY: THE PRIEST WHO NEVER LOST HOPE
A priest serving in a poor rural community faced many challenges:- lack of resources,
- criticism,
- exhaustion,
- loneliness.
Yet people always noticed his peaceful smile.
Someone once asked him:
“Father, why are you always joyful?”
He answered:
“Because I learned from Mary to thank God before seeing the miracle.”
His joyful faith inspired many people back to the Church.
Joy is contagious.
A joyful Christian becomes a witness to others.
WHY THE WORLD NEEDS CHRISTIAN JOY TODAY
Modern society is filled with:- depression,
- anxiety,
- anger,
- division,
- hopelessness.
Many people are emotionally exhausted.
This is why the world desperately needs joyful believers.
Not fake happiness.
Not pretending problems do not exist.
But deep spiritual joy rooted in Christ.
When Christians live joyfully:
- families become stronger,
- communities become more peaceful,
- faith becomes attractive to others.
Joy evangelizes.
People are drawn toward peaceful and grateful hearts.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAPPINESS AND JOY
Happiness depends on circumstances.Joy depends on God.
Happiness changes quickly:
- good news brings happiness,
- bad news removes it.
But Christian joy remains even during hardship because it is built on faith.
Mary’s joy survived:
- fear,
- uncertainty,
- suffering,
- rejection.
That is true spiritual joy.

God works through willing hearts.
Mary teaches young people:
- purity,

- trust.
REAL-LIFE STORY: THE STUDENT WHO ALMOST GAVE UP
A university student failed several exams and became discouraged. He began feeling worthless and hopeless.
One evening he attended a Marian prayer gathering where the preacher said:
“God has not finished writing your story.”
Those words changed him.
He started praying daily and trusting God again.
With time, he improved academically and graduated successfully.
Later he said:
“My greatest victory was not passing exams. It was regaining hope.”
Mary often restores hope to broken hearts.
MARY LEADS US TO JESUS
Everything about Mary points to Christ. At Canaan in Galilee she said:
«“Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5»
That remains her message today.
True devotion to Mary always brings people closer to Jesus.
Mary does not replace Christ.
She leads people to Him.
THE POWER OF PRAISE
Praise changes the atmosphere of the soul.People who praise God regularly experience:
- greater peace,
- stronger faith,
- deeper hope.
Praise shifts focus away from fear and toward God’s goodness.
Acts 16 tells the story of Paul and Silas praising God in prison.
Even in chains, they worshipped.
And God performed a miracle.
Praise invites God’s presence into difficult situations.
WHEN JOY FEELS IMPOSSIBLE
Some people reading this may feel emotionally tired.Perhaps you are:
- grieving,
- lonely,
- struggling financially,
- facing sickness,
- carrying emotional pain.
Mary understands suffering.
She stood beneath the Cross.
If joy feels distant today, begin with small prayers:
“Lord, help me.”
“Mary, pray for me.”
“Jesus, I trust in You.”
Sometimes healing begins slowly.
But God never abandons His children.
CONCLUSION
“Her joy magnifies the Lord’s goodness.”
Mary’s life reminds us that true joy is found not in wealth, comfort, or popularity, but in God.
Her joy came from:
- faith,
- humility,
- prayer,
- gratitude,
- surrender to God.
The world needs people who reflect God’s goodness through joyful faith.
Like Mary, may we learn:
- to praise God during every season,
- to trust Him during suffering,
- to remain humble,
- to live with gratitude,
- to bring peace to others.
Let our lives become songs of praise to God.
And whenever life becomes difficult, remember Mary’s words:
«“My soul magnifies the Lord.”»
May our hearts also magnify His goodness every day.
Amen.
If this reflection blessed you, kindly share it with friends and family. May the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to intercede for us and lead us closer to Jesus every day.
